Background of the Study:
Reality TV shows have become a prominent part of contemporary media, significantly influencing youth culture and aspirations. In Calabar Municipality, Cross River State, these programs often present dramatized versions of success, lifestyle, and achievement that can shape young viewers’ perceptions of career and personal goals (Etim, 2023). The vivid portrayal of wealth, glamour, and personal transformation in reality TV has the potential to create both aspirational role models and unrealistic expectations among the youth (Inyang, 2024). While some argue that these shows inspire creativity and ambition, others contend that they may lead to distorted views of success, thereby influencing educational and career choices in potentially adverse ways (Abasi, 2023). Moreover, the pervasive presence of such media forms calls for an investigation into how these televised narratives align with local cultural values and the socioeconomic realities of Calabar Municipality. Understanding this interplay is crucial in discerning the broader social impact of media on youth development in an increasingly digital era.

Statement of the Problem:
Despite the popularity of reality TV shows, there is uncertainty regarding their true influence on youth aspirations in Calabar Municipality. Many young people may internalize unrealistic standards of success, leading to dissatisfaction with conventional career paths. This gap between media portrayal and local socioeconomic contexts has not been sufficiently explored, necessitating an in-depth evaluation of the phenomenon (Etim, 2023).

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To evaluate the influence of reality TV shows on youth aspirations in Calabar Municipality.

  2. To identify the positive and negative impacts of these shows on youth career choices.

  3. To propose recommendations for mitigating unrealistic expectations among young viewers.

Research Questions:

  1. How do reality TV shows influence youth aspirations in Calabar Municipality?

  2. What aspects of these shows resonate most with young viewers?

  3. How do youth perceptions of success compare with local socioeconomic realities?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Reality TV shows significantly shape youth aspirations in Calabar Municipality.

  2. Exposure to reality TV correlates with an increased desire for non-traditional career paths.

  3. Critical viewing of reality TV is associated with more realistic career expectations.

Significance of the Study:
The study’s insights will be valuable for educators, media regulators, and parents by providing a clearer understanding of media influence, helping to design programs that encourage realistic and sustainable youth aspirations (Ndukwe, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to evaluating the influence of reality TV shows on youth aspirations in Calabar Municipality, Cross River State.

Definitions of Terms:

  1. Reality TV Shows: Television programs that document unscripted real-life situations.

  2. Youth Aspirations: The ambitions and career goals of young individuals.
